Taarif — Privacy Policy

Taarif ("we", "us") makes a cooking app that turns the food you have into dinner. This policy explains what we collect, why, and your choices.

What we collect

Account — your name, email, and the sign-in method you choose (email, Sign in with Apple, or Google). If you use Sign in with Apple's private-relay email, that's what we store.
Your kitchen data — the pantry, shopping list, recipes you cook, taste ratings, household membership, and meal plans you create. This is the core of the app and stays tied to your household.
Fridge and receipt photos — a photo of your shelf or a grocery receipt, either taken with the camera or chosen from your photo library, is sent to our AI provider to read the ingredients and discarded immediately after — we do not store the photo. Only the ingredients you confirm are saved to your pantry. Choosing an existing photo reads only the one image you pick; we never browse your library.
Shared content (Tables) — photos and captions you choose to post to the social feed, plus any reports or blocks you make.
Approximate location — if you allow it, we use a city-level approximation to show nearby Tables. We never collect your precise location.
Purchases — Taarif Plus subscriptions are processed by Apple and managed through RevenueCat; we receive the subscription status (active/expired), not your card details.
Notifications — if you allow notifications, your device's push token, so the reminders you turn on can reach you.
Diagnostics — crash and performance reports, tagged with your account ID so we can find and fix a problem you tell us about.

How we use it

To suggest recipes, read fridge and receipt photos, plan your week, and power the shared kitchen.
To keep the Tables feed safe: every caption and photo is checked by an automated content filter before it posts, and our team reviews reports.
To send the reminders you turn on — nothing else.
To provide and bill Taarif Plus.
To fix crashes and improve the app.

We do not sell your data, and we do not use your food or kitchen data for advertising.

AI processing

Your recipe suggestions are ranked on our own servers, without AI. AI is used for these, each by a processor handling that single request:

"Dinner from scratch", the weekly plan, and the Tables content filter — Anthropic's Claude (text, and the photos you post to Tables).
Fridge and receipt photos — Google's Gemini. The photo is discarded after the ingredients are read.

Under the API terms we use them on, neither provider may use this data to train its models.

Anthropic — as an AI processor (above).
Google — as an AI processor for fridge and receipt photos (above), and through Firebase Cloud Messaging, which delivers notifications (your push token and the notification's text).
Apple / RevenueCat — to process and validate subscriptions.
Sentry — crash and performance reports.
Our email provider — to deliver sign-in and verification emails.
Our hosting/infrastructure providers — to run the service.

We share only what each provider needs, and only to run Taarif.

Retention & deletion

Your kitchen data is kept while your account is active. You can delete your account in the app at any time (Profile → Delete account); deletion runs on a 30-day grace period (in case you change your mind) and then permanently removes your data. Shared Tables you posted are removed with your account.

Children

Taarif is rated 12+ and is not directed at children under 13. We don't knowingly collect data from children under 13.

Your choices

Turn location off (Settings) — the app still works; you just won't see nearby Tables.
Turn camera/photo access off — you can still add pantry items by name, by typing a barcode, or by picking a photo you already took.
Turn notifications off, individually (Settings ▸ Notifications). Everything is off by default except use-soon reminders, and we send nothing else — no offers, no streak nagging, no "we miss you".
Delete your account in-app.
